Airlie’s Garden Guides are trained in the History, Horticulture and Ecology of Airlie Gardens. Volunteer tour Guides give guided walking tours to pre-scheduled tour groups. This is a flexible position based upon your availability. When tours are scheduled, an emailed guide request is sent out to all Garden Guides to respond to, based upon their availability. A typical guided walking tour of Airlie takes about an hour and a half.
Airlie also offers a 9-passenger Accessibility Tram to guests needing assistance traveling through the garden. Tram Volunteers will go through a tram-training course and are also given the option to learn more about the history, horticulture and ecology of Airlie. Drivers are not required to give guided tours, they are mostly available for accessibility, but are welcome to provide as much knowledge to guests as they desire. Trams run on a continuous designated path through the garden. Most volunteer tram shifts are 2-3 hours long. Tram drivers must have a valid NC driver’s license and must be 25 years or older.
