Great Backyard Bird Count

Join us on Friday, February 17th or Saturday, February 18th for one of our Great Backyard Bird Counts!

Count with Us! Day 1 (Friday – Ages 12+) at Airlie Gardens

Take part in a global citizen science project initiated by The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada to help scientists learn more about global bird populations before their annual migration. We will go over how to use and record information in the eBird App and website as well as the Merlin ID App for identifying birds. We will then go on a bird hike and submit our data to the project! Advance registration is required. Members please sign in to your online member account to receive 50% discount on tickets.  

  • When? Friday, February 17th, 8:00AM -10:00AM
  • Where?  Friday’s program takes place at Airlie Gardens
  • Cost? $9 Adults (ages 12+), $5 New Hanover County Residents or Military (with ID), Airlie Members receive a 50% discount.
  • This program is suitable for adults or children, ages 12+. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • The program will be held outdoors. In the event of inclement weather, the program will be cancelled.
  • Participants may use their own binoculars or borrow a pair on-site.

Count with Us! Day 2 (Saturday – All Ages) at Smith Creek Park

Take part in a global citizen science project initiated by The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada to help scientists learn more about global bird populations before their annual migration. We will go over how to use binoculars, common bird species, and basic ID. We will then go on a bird hike and play bird bingo before submitting our data to the project!

  • When? Saturday, February 18th, 9:00AM-10:30AM
  • Where?  Saturday’s program takes place at Smith Creek Park (633 Shenandoah Street)
  • Cost? FREE
  • This program is suitable for families. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Program will be held both indoors and outdoors. In the event of inclement weather, program will be cancelled.
  • Participants may use their own binoculars or borrow a pair on-site.
