Environmental based volunteer opportunities at Airlie include assisting with habitat or lifecycle interpretation during special events, staffing for booths at relevant outreach festivals, and assisting with maintenance in our “bug zoo” and butterfly house. Specialized training and background checks are required for these areas.
Airlie Gardens’ Environmental Education Program team of 2 educators also lead educational field trips at the Gardens throughout the year for area schools. Airlie Gardens offers a growing number of field trips and curricula that are correlated to the science objectives in NC Essential Standards for kindergarten through 8th grade. Airlie also offers customized field trips to any group. To facilitate these programs, the Environmental Education Program is also looking for specialized volunteers with experience teaching school-age children, and grade school science. Prior Airlie volunteering experience and extensive training is required in order to teach and lead field trips, and background checks and drug screens are conducted for anyone interacting with youth.
