Surround yourself in serenity by visiting Airlie’s 2,700-square foot butterfly house. Butterflies, all native to North Carolina, can be found flying about inside this open-air structure.

Species like:

  • Monarch
  • Gulf Fritillary
  • Common Buckeye
  • Black Swallowtail
  • and MANY more!

Summer Butterfly Releases

Take part in a butterfly release! One of Airlie’s Environmental Educators will be in our native Butterfly House to release butterflies and discuss their life cycle and our current species. In the event of rain, we will have an Educator in our classroom.

When: Tuesdays at 10am during the summer

Admission: NEW!! Pre-registration is required. Check in with your pre-reserved tickets at the Garden Services Center at arrival. 

Who: All ages welcome!  Children under the age of 14 must be supervised by an adult. 

Advance tickets are required and must be purchased online. Airlie Members must also reserve tickets in advance!

Pollinator Garden


After exploring the Native Butterfly House, take a walk behind the model Airlie House to our Pollinator Garden! This garden was planted with flowering blooms that will specifically attract pollinator species year round; such as, butterflies, bees, moths, hummingbirds and more!
